Curriculum and Books:
One of the reasons we read is to acquire a stronger understanding of ourselves and the world around us. That being said, Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, and other websites simply do not give justice to the richness of the texts we will be reading this year, so please do not use these websites as replacements for the assigned readings. You can expect to be assigned approximately 25 pages of reading per night. I will give frequent reading quizzes on the content of the reading.
Tentative list of texts for the year:
V for Vendetta, Alan Moore
The Lord of the Flies, William Golding
The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates
Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe
No Exit, Jean-Paul Sartre
Hamlet, William Shakespeare
selected poetry, articles, short stories, &
an outside reading book
During the second half of the year, students will demonstrate an understanding of research skills, analysis of text and images, and presentation skills by completing the Senior Independent Project (SIP). Students will be examining a text of their choosing through a critical lens, also of their choosing. The process will take fourth term with a culminating 3-5 page paper and accompanying presentation. Not to worry… I will give students a great deal of support along the way, as the process will be broken down into several manageable steps!
You will be assigned several writing assignments throughout the course of the year. For longer writing assignments, we will spend time in class brainstorming, editing, and revising. All writing assignments should be written in MLA format.
All major writing assignments will be submitted to Turnitin.com, a site that checks student work for plagiarism. Please click here for instructions on setting up a Turnitin.com account. All writing assignments must be your own, original work. Any form of plagiarism warrants serious disciplinary action. If you have any questions about your work or someone else’s regarding plagiarism, please see me. Please click here for the Needham High School academic integrity policy.
